The ET&WNC Railroad needed many water tanks to keep engines stocked with the water needed to create steam. All of the water tanks shared similar designs, and depending on the location, tanks were built with one of two support structures underneath. The tanks at Cranberry and Linville were made from 9 upright supports while tanks at Bemberg and Elizabethton had 12 upright support timbers.
