Pittsburgh Railway Shelters
These shelters were a means that passengers in outlying villages and towns would be able to wait in relative comfort for the interurban railway to take them into the cities. These were primitive at best; they had no door and only a shutter to close the window. The shelters were placed at most passing tracks. If needed the railroad would install stairs to get passengers to the shelters. Most interurban trains ran on the hour so having a place that was out of the weather to sit was welcome. Many of the shelters remained standing long after the railway retired; others were taken by local farms and homes and used as sheds. A few of the shelters were saved and moved to rail museums to be preserved.
