Merchants Despatch Transportation Company operated one of the best known and most visually striking freight car fleets in the United States. Beginning in 1882, they ordered large numbers of Wickes' Patent 34' refrigerator cars from multiple builders. These cars were modified and upgraded numerous times and lasted until 1922.
