The U class series of boxcars, an experimental series of Iron clad boxcars used by the B&O. Construction of this car series began in 1862. Over Three Hundred of the cars were produced by the end of 1865 at the Mt. Clare shops of the B&O, with many entering general freight service. The cars remained in service for a good while, though the iron plate construction of the cars was cause for several issues. The cars were uninsulated, leading to sweltering temperatures inside the cars during the summer months, often spoiling perishable goods, while the interiors rusted on a number if them due to condensation. Nevertheless, the cars could still be found in useful service leading up to the 1870's, with many being retired soon thereafter. A great number of the withdrawn boxcars were relegated to use as stationary sheds and offices, with two such examples surviving long enough to be slated for display during the Fair of the Iron Horse in 1927. These two surviving cars can now be found at the B&O Railroad museum the rebuilt state, with one such being examined for future conversion to its original as-built configuration.`

An appropriate set of Archbar trucks must be sourced separately, in addition to couplers. The model will need a roof, one should preferribly be made of Plastic card stock. A few taps are also on the model for drilling handrails, chassis Tie Bars & the Tunnel Brake wheel. Appropriate Decals will also need to be saparately sourced.
