J&L STEEL WORKS PORTER
J&L STEEL WORKS PORTER
Steelmaking is a business that involves lugging huge amounts of, shockingly, steel and ore around. For their 23″ gauge plant railroad, Jones & Laughlin Steel Company of Youngstown, OH turned to HK Porter to build compact locomotives designed to drag as much stuff around in confined spaces as possible. Four complete engines still exist. 57, 58, and 60 are presently in the care of Youngstown Steel Heritage in Youngstown, OH. The surviving parts of 59 are also in their possession, while 62 is somewhere in Colorado.
The current version of this kit is essentially a kitbash project. The body is to scale, and large cylinders are part of the model. But fitting a mechanism? That’s up to you for now. Eventually, we’ll do mounting plates for specific mechanisms that can be found on the first and second-hand markets.
