An HO scale model of the groundbreaking locomotive Experiment designed by John Bloomfield Jervis, and built by the West Point Foundry for the Mohawk & Hudson railway in 1832. This model was scaled from the original side elevation drawing preserved in the Jervis Library, in Rome, New York. Experiment was the first locomotive with a leading truck (although the truck itself was not a new idea, even in 1832), and the first 4-2-0 locomotive. It ran over the 16 mile line connecting Albany and Schenectady. See my other items for the tender.

The photo shows the prototype model, which lacks some of the details of the currently available model, please see the render to get an idea of the current iteration (it has the boiler lagging and rivet details printed in).
  • Driving wheels for this model can be had from American Scale Models, listed on their site as "1033-28 - HO Scale - Steam Loco, trailing truck wheels, 54" spoked".
  • The truck wheels are spoked 33" wheels with flush axle ends available from Precision Scale Models, catalog number 31904 (can also be found at various online shops or ebay).
  • Further detailing may be added through the use of resin rivet decals (I used Archer rivets on the boiler, as seen in the photos).
Important: it may be necessary to trim or file the axle openings in order to fit the axles without snapping the plastic.
