This model represents a Gregg 30”-gauge 5-ton flared-side cane car as provided to the Grove Farm Sugar Plantation on Kauai and pictured in Gregg’s 1908 catalogue. The Grove Farm Homestead & Sugar Plantation Museum ( https://grovefarm.org/ ) currently uses several of these cars – reconstructed with the original metal hardware – on their historic sugar cane train rides. The sides of the prototype cars are hinged and drop down for unloading. A brake lever is located on one end.
The HOn30 model is designed to accommodate Micro Trains Line N 00102060 Civil War Era link-and-pin style couplers (preferred), the MTL N905 N 00102012 or Nn3 00202021 body-mount knuckle coupler (not included). Typically, HOn30 modelers use N-standard gauge trucks and couplers, with a coupler mounting height of 5.7mm above the rail. For this application, use Fox Valley FVM-3601 wheelsets. For modelers using the Z/Nn3 coupler mounting height of 5.2mm, use Fox Valley FVM-33601 wheelsets.
