Built in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Sam Rea shops in 1961, the G39s were built at a time when iron traffic was shifting to taconite. This represents the original pattern of car with air reservoirs under the car. The G39A came out in 1964 and saw the air tank relocated to the end of the car opposite the hand brake. These cars come less trucks and couplers.
