Around 1880, some car builders in the United States began experimenting with four-wheeled box cars mirroring trends in Europe. The New York Central and Hudson River built around 1500 of these cars in 1879. I was unable to find images of the car as-delivered, but there was an engraving in the 1879 Car Builder's Dictionary that I started with. One good photo exists of a rare car that survived past 1911, but it did not appear in any Official Railway Equipment Register listings. Ultimately I went with a combination of features from the photograph and the engraving to produce a car in its more-or-less 1880s appearance.

The underbody comes with both wooden brake beams, mounted inside the wheelbase, and metal brake beams, mounted outside. Either set can be removed to your liking.

Please note: THIS IS NOT A FULL KIT. You're getting a body, underbody, and coupler box covers. Additional parts and decals will have to be furnished by the modeler. I haven't done decals or created additional versions of this car - it was just something I drew for fun and decided to make available. That said, this may see a former Zenith Model Works re-release at some point down the line. Happy modeling! -Sam
