An On3/On30 or HOn3 model of Southern Pacific narrow-gauge caboose #401 post 1952 rebuild with a freight car roof. This model represents the later era of this caboose, including the slightly drooping end steps and mis-matched baggage doors.
Use scale 2x6s for the roof walk. For O scale that would be Evergreen #136, .03x.125 or Northeastern Scale Lumber OSCAL26P. For use HO Evergreen #8206 2x6, .022x.066 or Northeastern Scale Lumber HOSCAL2611
For trucks use Western Rail has 4'6" Thielson swing motion trucks, #Tr17 available in On3/On30 or HOn3. For On3/On30 versions San Juan Pacific SJP.Ax36 "leaf spring inserts" will make the trucks match the prototype closer.
The On3/On30 version uses Kadee #803 or #807 couplers and 2-56 screws (or equivalent) to mount the body. The HOn3 version uses Kadee #714 and 1-72 screws (or equivalent) to mount the body.
Also, the HOn3 version does not include molded on handrails but does have the end rails and ladders.
NOTE; like all SJP models, the fit between all the parts is tight. It is easier to sand something to fit that try to add material to make up for a loose fit.

A good overall model with several disappointing features. Positive features were the different style baggage doors per prototype and overall dimensions are accurate. Downfalls include that the frame is oversized for mounting to the body, requiring significant filing for proper fitment (there are screw mounts, so no need for an oversize frame). There is no roof walk supplied, and the hole for the smokejack is on the wrong side of the car. The end beams and ladder piece also requires sanding to mate properly. The model requires approximately $100 of additional detail parts to complete.
